Fake News

April 21, 2018

“Lies spread faster than truth.”

The quote is from a recent study in the journal Science – have you seen it? A team did a big study of Twitter data and found that not only do lies spread faster, but also deeper. In addition, Pew reports that 2/3 of US adults get news from social media.

Being able to think critically about what we hear and read and being able to research to find the truth is more important than ever. Let’s keep discussing and teaching about this important topic. Helpful resources follow . . .

We created a fake news display for National Library Week (April 8-14). It included this lovely graphic from the American Library Association:

The display also included this infographic from the International Federation of Library Associations:

We also made business-card-sized handouts with Snopes, Politifact, and FactCheck.org on them:

We included this worksheet and also some fake news bookmarks. Get your own fake news bookmarks from the American Library Association here.
